Knit This Build That

Bathroom Cabinet

Storage is always important no matter what room you are in. Bathrooms often seem especially cluttered under the sink. With 4 kids and only 1 full bathroom, a new cabinet was necessary. This was a simple build. I based the width on the 12″ mdf unfinished shelving that I was planning to use for the 2 doors. I had hinges that would allow a 1/2″ overhang, so that made it roughly 25″ wide. The cabinet went together pretty quickly. I used pocket holes for the box and shelves. The trim was just glued and nailed on (didn’t have my nail gun when I made this guy), but added a nice finishing touch. The cabinet has made a big difference in the main bathroom. I love when something so simple to build can look so classy country. I personally love white paint because it is clean looking and hides my imperfections. My Home Depot had a decent selection of 4′ long 1″x10″ pine boards when I made this cabinet about 2 years ago. They sand up well and finish very nicely, but are not so readily available in 2022. I also updated the hinges on the vanity doors, added a shelf to the vanity for even more organizational opportunities, and repainted the vanity so that the white paint would match on the side-by-side cabinets. The cabinet has a 1×2 brace piece on the 2nd shelf so that it can stay safely attached to the wall. No safety hazards, please. This was one my first larger furniture pieces and I have learned a lot since I made it, but it is still one of my favourite beginner projects.
